GE Transportation has acquired Iders Inc., an electronic product design and manufacturing company for the rail industry.

Iders Inc. built the GoLINC platform, which provides on-board processing, storage, networking and communications platform to turn locomotives into "mobile data centers," according to a GE press release.

Iders has been a GE partner for more than five years. Using GoLINC, GE writes applications to help trains and entire systems perform more effectively, GE officials said.

The acquisition furthers GE's "digital transformation," company officials added.

"This strategic acquisition marks another milestone for GE Transportation in creating an efficient, self-aware rail ecosystem that helps customers achieve smarter outcomes made possible by sensor data and analytics," said Jamie Miller, GE Transportation president and chief executive officer. "This acquisition puts GE in the driver's seat, allowing for faster innovation and scale, digital breakthroughs and future enhancements by in-house talent."

As part of the acquisition, GE will inherit ongoing product development projects aimed at improving productivity and other customer outcomes.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
