The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) yesterday broke ground on the Blue Hill Avenue Station on the Fairmount commuter-rail line.

Located in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood, the station will feature a center-island platform and two covered pedestrian ramps.

The agency expects to open the station in 2019, Massachusetts Department of Transportation officials said in a press release.

"This new station will serve as a vital connection to housing, jobs, retail destinations, and entertainment options," said Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack.

The station is part of $130 million worth of investments along the Fairmount Line. Other projects include bridge replacements and building other new stops.

The MBTA earlier this year awarded a $16.79 million contract to McCourt Construction to build the station.
