The new locomotives will replace some older PL-42AC series diesel locomotives to increase the mechanical reliability of the fleet and provide the flexibility to operate on both electrified and nonelectrified tracks, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.
The locomotives feature upgraded diesel engines and an after-treatment system to meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emission requirements, further reducing the locomotive’s emissions when operating in diesel mode.
NJ Transit expects delivery of the first locomotives from the $70.5 million order to occur in first-quarter 2022.
