CP posts record Q1 revenue, updates 2020 outlook

Canadian Pacific yesterday reported record first-quarter revenue and a record-low operating ratio (OR), but updated its 2020 outlook to reflect the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

CP's first-quarter 2020 revenue climbed 16 percent to CA$2.04 billion from CA$1.77 billion during the same period a year ago. The diluted earnings per share (EPS) fell 4 percent to $2.98 from $3.09; the adjusted EPS rose 58 percent to $4.42 from $2.79 percent.

CP posts record grain haul in Q1

Canadian Pacific logged its best first-quarter record for hauling Canadian grain and grain products during first-quarter 2020, during which the Class I hauled more than 6.35 million metric tons (MMT).

The 2020 results broke the company's previous Q1 record, set in 2016, by 300,000 metric tons, CP officials announced yesterday in a press release.

CP's Creel calls on Trudeau to hold talks with Wet'suwet'en

Canadian Pacific President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel last week called on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to hold talks with the Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs to bring to an end to the protest blockades that have affected the nation's freight- and passenger-rail networks.

In a Feb. 20 letter to Trudeau, Creel said the company's rail system has been "severely impacted" by the ongoing blockades, which have created "critical safety and security concerns."

Canadian Pacific moved 2.09 million metric tons of Canadian grain and grain products in January, beating the railroad's January 2019 record by 200,000 metric tons.

CP officials cited the railroad's 8,500-foot high-efficiency product (HEP) train model, dedicated train program (DTP) and new high-efficiency hopper cars as significant factors in the new record.

Canadian Pacific posts record revenue in Q4

Canadian Pacific today reported record revenue of CA$2.07 billion in fourth-quarter 2019, up 3 percent from CA$2.01 billion in the same period a year earlier. The Class I's Q4 diluted earnings per share (EPS) climbed 26 percent to $4.82 from $3.83 a year earlier. The adjusted EPS rose 5 percent to $4.77 from $4.55.CP posted a Q4 operating ratio (OR) of 57 percent, up 50 basis points compared with the previous year's mark.Net income for the quarter rose to CA$664 million from $545 million. Total operating expenses increased to CA$1.18 billion from CAS1.13 billion a year earlier."CP's strong operational performance and commitment to controlling costs enabled the railway to be successful despite headwinds to our bulk franchise," said CP President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel in a press release. "We continue to take a disciplined approach to sustainable, profitable growth — a plan rooted in the foundations of precision scheduled railroading. This approach in 2019 enabled CP to once again deliver its highest-ever revenues and the lowest-ever yearly operating ratio."For full-year 2019 compared with 2018, CP earned record revenue pf CA$7.79 billion, up 7 percent; a record diluted EPS of $17.52, up 29 percent; an adjusted diluted EPS of $16.44, up 13 percent; and an OR of 59.9 percent, an improvement of 140 basis points.Net income in 2019 was CA$2.4 billion, up from CA$1.95 billion in 2018.CP's full-year 2020 guidance calls for mid-single digit volume growth as measured in revenue ton miles and capital expenditures of CA$1.6 billion.

Canadian Pacific moved more grain and grain products in fourth-quarter 2019 than in any quarter in its history, the Class I announced yesterday.

CP shipped 7.9 million metric tons (MMT) during the quarter, breaking the previous record set in fourth-quarter 2018 by 400,000 metric tons, CP officials said in a press release.

Canadian Pacific announced Dec. 30 that it has completed its acquisition of the Central Maine & Quebec Railway (CMQ), although the transaction remains subject to U.S. Surface Transportation Board approval.

The acquisition will provide CP customers with "seamless, safe and efficient access" to ports at Searsport, Maine, and to Saint John, New Brunswick, via Eastern Maine Railway Co. and New Brunswick Southern Railway, CP officials said in a press release.

Canadian Pacific earlier this week released its 2018 corporate sustainability report, which highlights the Class I's achievements in safety, operational excellence and social impact.

Titled "Sustainably Driven," the report was developed using a new framework for reporting the company's efforts to align business practices with sustainability goals and objectives, CP officials said in a press release.

CP raises millions for food banks during 2019 Holiday Train tour

Canadian Pacific announced Tuesday that more than CA$2.49 million was raised and 238,393 pounds of food were collected for local food banks and shelves during the 21st Annual CP Holiday Train's North American tour, which wrapped up earlier this month.

Although the 2019 numbers are preliminary, CP estimates the Holiday Train has raised more than CA$16.7 million and collected 4.7 million pounds of food since its inaugural journey in 1999.

Canadian Pacific last month broke another record for moving Canadian grain and grain products.

The Class I delivered 2.74 million metric tons (MMT) during November, beating the October 2019 all-time record of 2.66 MMT, CP officials said in a press release.

Canadian Pacific announced last week that it will establish a multi-commodity transload terminal at its Cote Saint-Luc yard in Montreal.

CP will collaborate with freight transportation provider TYT Group of Quebec to offer transload services and logistics solutions from the terminal to customers in major cities along the East Coast, CP officials said in a press release.

CP logged record-breaking grain haul in October

Canadian Pacific announced yesterday that in October it broke its own record for Canadian grain and grain products moved in a single month, delivering 2.66 million metric tons (MMT).The Class I's previous grain-haul record was reached in April, when CP moved 2.64 MMT of Canadian grain and grain products."This record is a testament to ongoing collaboration with our customers and innovation within the grain supply chain," said Joan Hardy, CP vice president sales and marketing, grain and fertilizers, in a press release.CP also attributed the record-breaking haul to new high-capacity grain hopper cars now serving in CP's fleet, which increased the amount of grain carried in each rail car.CP now has more than 1,900 new high-capacity hopper cars in its fleet, with plans in place for another 1,400 cars by the end of 2020. The fleet will continue to grow in the years ahead as part of CP's $500 million investment in 5,900 new hopper cars. Shippers are able to load up to 10 percent more grain by weight and 15 percent more by volume in these cars compared to the older, less-efficient hoppers they are replacing, CP officials said.To learn more about CP's grain line of business, read this cover story in Progressive Railroading's November issue.

Officials from Canadian Pacific, short lines and transload operators met this week to develop growth-producing service offerings for customers as part of a Connect 2019 conference held at the Class I's headquarters in Calgary, Alberta.The event — which followed up the success of CP's 2018 Reconnect Conference — was attended by representatives from more than 50 companies Oct. 28 and 29, officials from the Class I said in a press release."Our goal in bringing together these companies annually is to find efficiencies and opportunities, something of critical importance in today's economic climate," said John Brooks, CP's executive vice president and chief marketing officer. CP works with an extensive network of short lines and regionals, providing access to almost any North American location beyond the reach of the Class I’s network, CP officials said."Our solid relationships with our Class I connections are part of the backbone to growth," said Brian Jonaitis, director of business development at Indiana Rail Road Co.CP also works with more than 100 North American transload facilities. The transload business unit is a critical area of focus and development for the Class I, with many unique opportunities to build on the company's franchise strengths to generate sustainable, profitable growth, CP officials said."Our transload alliance with CP at the Minneapolis Intermodal Terminal has been the key driver of our growth," said Revis Stephenson, president of Stone Arch Commodities.In addition to Brooks, other CP leaders who participated in the event included Joan Hardy, VP of grain and fertilizers; Jonathan Wahba, VP of intermodal and automotive; and Coby Bullard, VP of merchandise and energy, and chemicals.

Canadian Pacific posts record revenue, operating ratio in Q3

Canadian Pacific yesterday announced it achieved record third-quarter revenue of CA$1.98 billion and a record-low quarterly operating ratio (OR) of 56.1 percent.Year over year, revenue was up 4 percent. The Class 1 reported Q3 adjusted net income climbed 8.7 percent to CA$640 million, or CA$4.61 earnings per share (EPS), from CA$589 million, or $4.12 per share, a year ago. CP's diluted EPS of CA$4.46 was up 3 percent.Q3 operating income rose 10 percent to CA$869 million from CA$790 million a year ago. CP's record-low quarterly OR of 56.1 percent was a 220-basis-point improvement from the same quarter last year."After a record second-quarter that included strong operating metrics including train speed and terminal dwell, we continue to see those performance measures be improved upon," said President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel in a press release. "Our disciplined approach to precision scheduled railroading and the commitment of our 13,000-strong CP family puts us in a position to control what we can as we navigate softer volumes, macroeconomic challenges and geopolitical tensions into the fourth quarter."CP's operating model enables the company to adapt to a changing environment, Creel said."While we now expect low-single digit volume growth for the year, we remain confident in our guidance to deliver full-year double-digit adjusted diluted EPS growth," he said.

Canadian Pacific on Sept. 18 presented G3 Pasqua with the Class I's 2018-19 crop-year Elevator of the Year Award.

CP presents the award annually to the grain elevator that achieves high volumes from a single loading point while consistently demonstrating efficient rail-car loading and a strong commitment to safety, CP officials said in a press release.
