Amazon coming to rail-served park in Maryland

Amazon will open a new distribution facility at the Tradepoint Atlantic multimodal industrial park near Baltimore.

The new fulfillment facility — Amazon's fourth in Maryland — will be located in Sparrows Point at Tradepoint Atlantic, the site of a former steel mill that closed in 2012.

Tradepoint Rail serves the park and provides access to CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.

"We're excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in historic Sparrows Point and to continue innovating in a state committed to providing great opportunities for jobs and customer experience," said Sanjay Shah, Amazon's vice president of North America customer fulfillment in a press release.

The new center is expected to create more than 1,500 full-time positions. Amazon currently employs 5,000 workers at its sortation and fulfillment centers in Baltimore and fulfillment center in North East, Maryland.

"Successfully delivering this project and these 1,500 new jobs has been a top priority of our administration and another example of how Maryland is and will continue to be open for business," said Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.
