Amtrak will restore Acela service on the Northeast Corridor on June 1. The service will run on a modified schedule in response to anticipated increased demand, the railroad announced today.

Modified service will include the restoration of three weekday Acela roundtrips.

Amtrak’s Northeast Regional service frequencies also will be increased from eight to 10 roundtrips.

On May 11, Amtrak will start requiring passengers to wear masks or facial coverings on trains and at stations to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the new policy, facial coverings can be removed when riders are eating in designated areas, in their private rooms, or seated alone or with a travel companion in their own pair of seats, Amtrak officials said in a press release.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority also will require facial coverings on its rail system beginning May 11; the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District began requiring facial coverings for South Shore Line riders and employees last week.

Meanwhile in Canada, VIA Rail Canada Inc. has extended its suspension of the Canadian and Ocean long-distance services until Nov. 1.
