Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) board last week appointed Robert Powers as the agency's 10th general manager.

Powers most recently served as BART’s interim GM following the retirement of Grace Crunican earlier this month. He also has served as the authority’s deputy GM and assistant GM of planning, development and construction, BART officials said in a press release.

In his seven-year career at BART, Powers oversaw the implementation of Measure RR, a $3.5 billion infrastructure bond, and was responsible for expanding BART service into Antioch and South Fremont, California; planning efforts to modernize stations; and the effort to develop land near stations.

Powers is an engineer with more than 20 years of experience in public transportation.

Prior to joining BART, Powers held executive positions at Seattle's Department of Transportation (DOT) and the City of Baltimore DOT.

Powers announced he plans to launch a “listening tour” to meet riders and employees.

“I’ll work to protect the public’s investment by delivering major projects that will improve and expand service for our riders like the Fleet of the Future, overhauling our aged infrastructure, a new train control system, expansion into Silicon Valley, and addressing quality of life issues,” Powers said in a press release.
