Crews will replace four mainline switches and other critical railway components, some of which are more than 40 years old, BART officials said in a press release.
The project will require five weekend track shutdowns between the Lafayette and Rockridge stations on May 9-10, May 34-25, June 6-7, June 20-21 and July 4-5.
Rail service will be replaced by free buses during construction..
Over the summer, BART crews also will begin major track replacement work in Hayward between the Bay Fair and Souther Hayward stations.
Meanwhile, crews continue station improvement projects, such as LED light installations, during the agency’s time of low ridership and to take advantage of earlier station closings. On March 28, BART’s ridership had dropped 92 percent compared to an average Saturday in February due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
