California rail authority inks broadband pact for high-speed corridor

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) and the Corporation for Education Networking Initiatives in California (CENIC) have entered into a memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding the availability of high-capacity broadband throughout California.

As part of the high-speed rail corridor, the agency and CENIC will create a broadband network connecting to CENIC's statewide research and education network, as well as to other public- and private-sector broadband networks, CHSRA officials said in a press release.

"This new network will provide needed connectivity for communities located near the high-speed rail system starting in the Central Valley," said CHSRA Chief Executive Officer Jeff Morales. "This partnership and new network will advance economic development and public benefit while generating ancillary revenue for the high-speed rail program."

The authority and CENIC agreed to develop a strategic plan for network design, deployment, economics, operation and management. They intend to work with the private, public and government sectors as part of the planning process.
