GO Transit Whitby facility to open December 2017

The new GO Transit Whitby Rail Maintenance Facility is nearing completion after more than two and a half years of construction.

The project, which began in March 2015, consists of a 500,000-square-foot facility that will include maintenance, repair, cleaning and tracks and storage space for 13 trains, expandable to up to 22 trains. Officials say the facility, which is expected to open in December 2017, will support between 300 and 400 local jobs.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on Oct. 13 for New Jersey Transit's Raritan River Bridge Replacement project.

The issuance of the FONSI is a milestone as NJ Transit moves forward to make its infrastructure more resilient to extreme weather following the devastating impacts of Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

NVTA’s $43 billion build-out strategy

WMATA Metrorail extensions, capacity and service enhancements for Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and new light rail transit (LRT) are among the numerous projects proposed by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) in a TransAction Plan Update adopted Oct. 12.

"Addressing regional transportation needs through 2040, the Transaction Plan focuses on eleven major travel corridors in Northern Virginia and identifies 352 projects and $43.2 billion in unmet transportation needs," NVTA said.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement review (Draft EIS) for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's (SEPTA) King of Prussia Rail Project (KOP Rail). 

KOP Rail is a proposed extension of SEPTA's existing Norristown High Speed Line (NHSL) into King of Prussia and would provide a "one-seat" ride to King of Prussia from either the 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby or the Norristown Transportation Center.

RTD receives FRA approval to finish G Line testing

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) has been granted conditional approval from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to conclude testing along the G Line.

While FRA's permission is a step in the direction RTD needs to complete testing, the transit authority is still waiting approval from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), which has state regulatory authority over the at-grade crossings. In September, the CPUC rejected RTD's application to finish testing of the G Line.

General Electric announced that Rafael Santana, president and Chief Executive of GE Latin America, has been named president and CEO of GE Transportation, effective November 1.

Santana, with more than 17 years at GE, held leadership positions in GE Oil & Gas, Power and Transportation before becoming the President and CEO of GE in Latin America. Griffin joins Amtrak as EVP and chief marketing officer

Amtrak has named marketing expert J. Timothy "Tim" Griffin as executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

Griffin will report directly to President and Co-CEO Richard Anderson and will be responsible for marketing, passenger experience, Northeast Corridor business development, state supported services business development, long distance services business development and product support and management.
