The work is necessary to increase capacity on a critical segment of trade infrastructure in the Vancouver area, according to a press release. The project calls for double tracking a 2.5-mile section of rail that links expanding import and export terminals on the Burrard Inlet's south shore to the national rail network.
By building a second track, CN will increase rail capacity, which will improve rail-traffic flow in and out of the port, as well as improve supply chain efficiency, CN officials said.
"The Port of Vancouver is the busiest global trade export gateway of Canada and we must make the most of the existing limited assets,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer JJ Ruest. "By contributing to new road and rail infrastructure beyond the port, we can help ease the impacts of growing trade on local communities while fulfilling our federal mandate to facilitate Canada’s trade objectives."
The Class I is discussing with partners and stakeholders the next steps and timeline to expedite construction and complete the project, CN officials said.
