image The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) last week awarded $200,000 in grants to 14 state Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) programs to fund highway-rail grade crossing safety public education projects. The FHWA funds will be awarded to Operation Lifesaver programs in Arizona, California, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington.  Grants will fund campaigns that raise public awareness of the need for caution near grade crossings, and community events that deliver safety tips to motorists and professional drivers, OLI officials said in a press release. The approved grants were awarded through a competitive process. The selection was based on safety need, the number of highway-rail collisions in the state, and how the project’s proposal leverages federal funds with private partnerships.
