Rail News: Passenger Rail

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is increasing rail services today to accommodate an expected influx of passengers seeking alternatives to driving due to a bridge collapse and massive fire on Interstate 85.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for Fulton County last night after fire officials extinguished the fire that led to the bridge collapse on northbound I-85.

Deal encouraged the public to avoid the area. The Georgia Department of Transportation is working with MARTA and other state and local transit agencies to assist commuters, according to a statement from Deal's office.

"MARTA is increasing rail services to assist travelers during this time," agency officials said in a post on MARTA's website. "Additional representatives are on hand to assist passengers as needed."
