MTA, TWU Local 100 agree on new contract

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 100 have reached a new collective bargaining agreement for New York City subway and bus workers, the union announced Monday.

The new pact, which covers 38,000 subway and bus workers, provides wage increases that outpace inflation, TWU officials said in a blog post.

The previous contract expired at midnight Sunday, but negotiating teams continued working through the night. All members reported to work on Monday.

The union and MTA reached the new agreement after "two months of tough negotiations," TWU officials said.

"We waged a multifaceted campaign that raised the awareness about the value transit workers have to this city, the dangerous nature of their work, and the sacrifices they make to move 8 million riders a day," said Local 100 President John Samuelsen in a statement.

More details on the new contract will be made available to union members in the coming days.
