Rail News from SNC-Lavalin, SYSTRA, AECOM, EnviroServe, HNTB and Railway Interchange (April 3)

SNC-Lavalin subsidiary TransitNEXT has secured a $663 million deal with the city of Ottawa to design, build and finance the Trillium light-rail extension project, which will extend the route from the Greenboro Station to a new terminal west of Limebank Road in Ottawa, Ontario. SNC-Lavalin will maintain the new extension, as well as assume responsibility for long-term maintenance of the existing Trillium Line, according to a companty press release. Construction of the extension will be completed in 2022.

SYSTRA has been selected by the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority to lead the transit technology evaluation component of Project Connect, according to a press release. Project Connect includes short-term enhancement projects and investments into a high-capacity transit system serving the Austin, Texas, community. SYSTRA will also lead system integration, testing and commissioning in later phases of the project.

AECOM has named Beth McCluskey associate vice president and director of business development for transit and freight rail. McCluskey has more than 20 years of experience in the transportation industry, according to an AECOM press release. Most recently she worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation as director of the Office of Intermodal Project Implementation, and previously was the department head for capital program development at Metra in Chicago. 

Savage environmental service companies EnviroServe and Sunpro are combining under the EnviroServe brand. EnviroServe provides environmental and rail services to safely remediate and prevent environmental releases, manage waste and respond to emergency and catastrophic events. The brand will also add three regional offices in Detroit, Minneapolis, and Columbus, Ohio, according to an EnviroServe press release.

HNTB Corp. has hired Thomas Mangold as rail program manager. He will support HNTB’s largest and most complex transit and rail infrastructure projects in his new position, according to an HNTB press release. Prior to joining the firm, Mangold was chief engineering officer for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority. Additionally, CJ Gagner will join the firm’s San Diego office as a rail systems engineer. Gagner served BNSF Railway Co. for nearly 20 years, most recently as a construction signalman, signal maintainer and inspector. Craig Hettinger will join HNTB as a positive train control (PTC) systems engineer in Denver. Prior to joining the firm, Hettinger was a general construction supervisor for BNSF, providing surveys, installation and signal system upgrades to support PTC implementation. 

Registration is now open for Railway Interchange (RI) 2019, a railway exhibition and technical conference that will be held Sept. 22-25 in Minneapolis. The exhibition showcases the latest technology, services and research by members of the Railway Supply Institute, Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association and Railway Systems Suppliers Inc., according to the RI website. The conference also features technical presentations by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association and the Coordinated Mechanical Associations.
