CN set grain haul record in May

CN announced yesterday it moved more than 2.52 million metric tons (MMT) of western Canadian grain last month, ahead of the previous May record of 2.4 MMT set in 2014 and over 20 percent ahead of the three-year average.The results follow record grain hauls in March and April, when CN moved 2.62 MMT and 2.74 MMT, respectively, from western Canada. During the 2019-2020 crop year, CN has moved 23.3 MMT of western Canadian grain.When considering Canada-wide performance, CN also set a record for May with more than 2.6 MMT moved compared with the previous record of 2.52 MMT set in 2014, CN officials said in a press release."This has not been an easy year for farmers or for the supply chain, yet by working closely with our customers, we have been able to adapt and deliver," said James Cairns, CN's senior vice president of rail centric supply chain. "This crop year has seen wet weather delay the harvest, service disruptions, and a pandemic, all of which have impacted the supply chain and yet the results continue to set records."

Braskem USA, a leading producer of biopolymers, announced today it has selected Charleston, South Carolina, as the location for its new Global Export Hub to serve the company's international customers.

Expected to be completed by the third quarter, the new hub will have a capacity to support shipments of up to 450 million pounds of polypropylene and specialty polymers annually to customers worldwide, Braskem officials said in a press release.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LA Metro) board last week released an updated draft of its 2020 Long Range Transportation Plan, a $400-billion, 30-year transportation blueprint for Los Angeles County. 

The plan outlines what LA Metro is doing currently to address transportation challenges, and what the agency must do over the next 30 years to plan, build, manage and maintain the region’s transportation system.

U.S. Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) last week introduced legislation that would authorize a $5 billion annual investment over a five-year period to fund intercity passenger-rail service. 

The Building Rail Across Intercity Networks To Ride Around Interior of the Nation (BRAIN TRAIN) Act would allow the U.S. Department of Transportation to implement a competitive grant program that would fund up to $25 billion for high-performance rail projects over five years.

The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) last week adjusted its budget as the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic become clearer.

TriMet expects to lose about $63 million in revenue through June, and projects a $135.4 million loss for fiscal-year 2021, which starts July 1.

Several U.S. passenger-rail agencies suspended service over the weekend, and some into this week, out of concern for rider and operator safety as protests over the death of George Floyd continue across the nation. 

In Minneapolis, where Floyd was killed, Metro Transit light-rail and commuter-rail service will remain suspended through today. Agency officials will provide an update on future service plans at 8 p.m. tonight.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) last week put into operation the first nine of 18 new working tracks as part of the authority's Mason Mega Rail project.

The action marks a milestone in the project, which has been in the works for more than four years and is designed to expand service to the U.S. Southeast and Midwest, GPA officials said in a press release.

Transit industry leaders blast CDC for recommending commuters avoid mass transit

U.S. transit industry leaders sharply criticized a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation that encourages people to commute to work by driving or using ride-hailing services instead of riding on public transit systems.

The CDC suggested that employers consider encouraging employees to commute by car or as the sole passenger in a ride-hailing service car. The suggestion was included in guidelines issued by the agency as the nation's cities emerge from restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This phase of the project — which was delayed from its original March start date due to the COVID-19 outbreak — includes replacing 70-year-old signals between Church Avenue and Coney Island stations with a communications-based train control (CBTC) system.

Brightline in talks with Miami-Dade to run commuter-rail line, report says

Brightline/Virgin Trains USA is discussions with Miami-Dade County in Florida about building five train platforms between Miami and Aventura and launching a $425 million commuter-rail system, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

The proposed deal was revealed Tuesday, the newspaper reported. Under the arrangement, Miami-Dade would pay the company $350 million to construct stations after Brightline spent $75 million building platforms that could be used to launch the commuter service.

FTA to offer grants for transit technology innovation

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) yesterday announced the availability of $1.25 million in funding to demonstrate innovative technologies that improve the state of good repair for transit agencies. The grants will be provided through the federal Public Transportation Innovation Program, funds research, development, demonstrations and deployment projects aimed at improving public transportation. FTA emphasized the Real-Time Transit Infrastructure and Rolling Stock Condition Assessment Demonstration Program as a competitive demonstration opportunity under its research area of infrastructure.The demonstration program's primary goal is to enhance asset management of infrastructure and safety through technology that can provide real-time condition assessment of transit capital and facilities, FTA officials said in a press release.Eligible applicants include public transportation agencies, state and local departments of transportation and technology system suppliers.

UP publishes annual sustainability progress report

Union Pacific Railroad yesterday published its 2019 Building America report that highlights the company's progress toward meeting social, economic and environmental initiatives.The report outlines the company's assessment results detailing subjects such as customer service and satisfaction, rail safety and maintenance, and employment practices."We've taken measurable steps to enhance customer communication, and we invest billions annually in our capital program to strengthen infrastructure, and we are dedicated to engaging employees and cultivating a work environment that celebrates diversity," said Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Lance Fritz in a press release.Among goals outlined in the report are UP's effort to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace. Women make up 5.5 percent of the railroad's total workforce, but UP is working to double the representation of women to 11 percent by 2030."To have the best employees, we can't overlook any segment of the population," said Chief Human Resource Officer Beth Whited. "Businesses such as ours face a growing shortfall of skilled trade workers due to fewer people choosing to learn a trade. We're looking at potential barriers for women in this line of work and finding solutions to these roadblocks."Gender equality is one of the United Nation's 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). UP's report also outlines the company's commitment to seven SDGs, including gender equality.

ProRail awarded Fugro a three-year framework contract for geotechnical investigations to support renewal work of existing rail lines across the Netherlands. Under the contract, Fugro will work with ProRail to identify and develop geotechnical solutions, such as faster cone penetration test techniques, that will increase efficiencies and reduce line closures, Fugro officials said in a press release.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) board approved a contract with Alstom Signaling Operations LLC to upgrade the agency's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. Alstom will replace software, servers, workstations, tunnel ventilation control systems, an overview display wall and a cyber security program, as well as provide data backup with remote-site archive sub-systems. Meanwhile, DART awarded Uber Technologies Inc. a three-year contract for rideshare services to supplement the agency’s GoLink on-demand shuttle service.

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's (ASLRRA) board earlier this month elected Dan Sabin as the small railroad-at-large member for a three-year term.President of the Iowa Northern Railway Co., Sabin succeeds Jack Parliament, who retired from the D&I Railroad Co. in December 2019, ASLRRA officials reported in the association's May 27 newsletter. Sabin also will chair the Small Railroad Committee.The election took place May 19 during a board meeting held via Zoom.Also at the meeting, ASLRRA Chair Doc Claussen created the Environmental Committee as a standing committee of the association. Paterson, CP mark launch of largest grain unit train

Paterson Grain announced earlier this month the shipment of Canadian Pacific's largest ever grain train moved from Paterson's terminal in Bowden, Alberta, to Vancouver, British Columbia.

The train, consisting of 167 new high-capacity hopper cars, was loaded at the company's Foothills Terminal and transported 16,313 metric tons of grain to the Alliance Grain Terminal in Vancouver, Paterson officials said in a press release.
