TransLink proposes three options for Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension

TransLink last week released cost estimates and three development options for a proposed SkyTrain line extension from Surrey to Langley, British Columbia.

The full proposed extension would run nearly 10 miles from the King George Station in Surrey to a future Langley Terminal, and would include eight stations and 55 vehicles. The estimated project cost is CA$3.12 billion. Annual operating and maintenance costs would total CA$32.4 million, offset by estimated annual fare revenue of CA$21.3 million per year starting in 2035, TransLink officials said.

Another option costing CA$2.22 billion would run nearly 9 miles from King George station to a future station in the town of Clayton. The option would include five stations and 35 vehicles. Annual operating and maintenance costs are estimated at CA$20.4 million, and annual revenue is projected at CA$13.5 million.

The third and shortest option costing CA$1.63 billion would run less than 4 miles from King George Station to a future station in the town of Fleetwood. The line would include four stations and 25 vehicles. Annual operating and maintenance costs would total CA$17 million, and estimated annual revenue would total CA$10.2 million.

All the options could be fully constructed in less than six years following project approval, however they’re dependent upon how much funding is available, TransLink officials said.

Currently there is about CA$1.6 billion available in funding, which is enough for the project to reach Fleetwood, they said. The funds had previously been allocated to the Surrey-Newton-Guildford light-rail project, which was indefinitely suspended in favor of the SkyTrain extension.

Any work beyond this amount is unfunded and would require contributions from other sources, TransLink officials said.

The agency will recommend that a full business case be developed for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project by early next year. The Mayors' Council on Regional Transportation will consider the findings and recommendation at its meeting on July 25.
