Transport Canada seeks input on hazmat transportation by rail

Transport Canada is soliciting public feedback on how hazardous materials are transported by rail as part of the agency's effort to update training requirements for emergency first responders and others who work with such goods.

The agency has set up a "Let's talk" website seeking comments from Canadians and transportation stakeholders in hazmat training requirements through Feb. 28, 2017.

In addition, Minister of Transport Marc Garneau will attend the First Responder Training Steering Committee's first meeting on Dec. 14. The committee is tasked with facilitating the development of a national curriculum for first responders who respond to rail incidents involving flammable liquids.

"My personal commitment — as well as our government's commitment — is to advance public safety through an enhanced Rail Safety program and an invigorated Transportation of Dangerous Goods program," said Garneau in a press release. "This means ensuring those who work with dangerous goods regularly, and those who must respond if something should go wrong, receive the most comprehensive training possible."
