The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) last week launched a fare evasion campaign to educate riders about the consequences of not paying fares.

The action follows a month-long investigation into fare evasion in which the Toronto Auditor General found that non-paying riders cost the TTC more than $60 million in 2018, according to a TTC press release.

Since the report was release in February, TTC has:

issued 4,549 tickets to fare evaders;  hired 11 additional fare inspectors;  analyzed data to determine high-risk subway entrances and streetcar routes to support strategic deployment of fare enforcement staff; and paused the distribution of complimentary child and youth fare cards to schools.

TTC plans to hire an additional 15 fare inspectors and 21 transit enforcement officers in July and September, as well as take other steps to prevent misuse of complimentary child and youth fare cards, agency officials said.

As part of the education campaign, ads will appear in TTC vehicles and stations, and videos will be displayed on screens in stations and on platforms.
