U.S. Reps. Moore, DeFazio visit rail suppliers in Wisconsin, Oregon

U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) this week joined representatives from Kiewit Infrastructure Co. and the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) for a tour of the Milwaukee Streetcar's operations and maintenance facility.

The tour group viewed the rail and station construction that Kiewit completed for Milwaukee's 2.5-mile streetcar system known as The Hop. NRC Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Matt Bell organized the tour, which was led by Kiewit Project Manager Mike Ethier and NRC board member and Kiewit employee Dave Landreth.

"Our project is a great example of private construction companies working with public entities like the city of Milwaukee to create local jobs and perform the project safely, on-time and on-budget," Ethier said in an NRC press release.

Tour attendees voiced their support for federal transportation grant programs, such as the Federal Transit Administration's Capital Investment Grants and the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development, formerly the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) met with Knife River Corp. representatives and other transportation stakeholders for a tour of the company's precast facility in Harrisburg, Oregon.

The NRC and the Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA) coordinated the event. Knife River employs more than 5,000 workers nationwide.

The company is among the largest producers of construction aggregates, asphalt and ready-mix concrete in Oregon, NRC officials said in a press release.

Tour attendees called for support of the federal Building Rail Access for Customers and the Economy Act, which will make permanent the 45G short-line tax credit.
