Norfolk Southern's Squires touts strategic plan achievements

Norfolk Southern Corp. is improving its corporate performance through "successful execution" of the company's five-year strategic plan, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer James Squires announced today at the company's annual meeting.

Last year was the first full year of the company's strategic plan to operate a faster, lower-cost and more profitable railroad. The Class I's achievements last year included an "all-time best" operating ratio of 68.9 percent, productivity savings of $250 million, near record levels of network service performance and record locomotive fuel efficiency, according to an NS press release.

NS to implement train crew management software

Norfolk Southern Corp. and software company PS Technology are developing a new train crew management and payroll system that is expected to improve efficiency, costs and productivity.NS and the firm have agreed to develop the automated system that would be deployed across the Class I's network, according to an NS press release."Incorporating PS Technology's CrewPro software with our operating and data platforms will save costs and streamline Norfolk Southern's train crew management and payroll processes," said Fred Ehlers, NS vice president information technology. "When deployed, the system will expand Norfolk Southern's digital capabilities to enhance interactions with our train crews.The "CrewPro" software will optimize train crew assignments by factoring in employees' work schedules and geographical operating credentials, federal regulations and labor contract requirements, Ehlers said."In effect, the software analyzes data to come up with the best, most efficient match of crew and train," he added.In addition to crew assignments, CrewPro will manage payroll, taxi and lodging services, and vacation scheduling for 11,700 NS transportation employees in train and engine service."The system leverages technology to reduce costs of managing train and engine service crews," said PS Technology President Seenu Chundru. "Optimization tools enable automated decision-making support and efficiency improvements.”Implementation of the new management system will help support the strategic plan to improve corporate performance, NS officials said. Norfolk Southern Corp. today reported first-quarter records for operating ratio, income from operations and earnings per share.

Q1 2017 net income rose 12 percent to $433 million compared with a year ago, due to a 7 percent rise in income from railway operations, as well as a lower effective income tax rate, NS executives said in a press release.

Norfolk Southern Railway has presented its 2016 Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Award to 55 of its customers for their safe handling of rail-shipped hazardous materials, the Class I announced yesterday.The honorees safely shipped 208,503 carloads of chemical products over the railroad’s network last year.NS created the award in 1996 to recognize chemical manufacturers and plants that ship at least 1,000 carloads of hazardous products over the railroad without a single incident during the year. Norfolk Southern Corp. yesterday posted its 2016 annual report online, highlighting its progress at achieving first-year goals in the Class I's five-year strategic plan to streamline operations and drive profitability and growth.

In the report, NS Chief Executive Officer James Squires told shareholders that the company in 2016 met or exceeded its targets to lower operating costs, increase profitability and improve customer service, which put NS "well on our way to achieving our 2020 goals."

Norfolk Southern Railway's safety train will stop in 23 cites this year as part of the Class I's Operation Awareness and Response (OAR) program to provide first responders with free training on how to respond to a railroad accident.

The train will kick off today in Hagerstown, Md., with three days of training at the NS terminal there, NS officials said in a press release.

Norfolk Southern Railway yesterday opened a new locomotive maintenance and repair facility in Chicago to improve operational efficiency for trains moving through the area.

NS' $9.5 million investment expands the Class I's locomotive repair capabilities in the Chicago region. Previously, locomotives in need of more extensive maintenance were transported to other repair shops on the NS system, company officials said in a press release.

NS facilitated industrial development worth $4 billion in 2016

Norfolk Southern Corp. assisted 71 businesses in locating or expanding facilities along the Class I's rail lines last year. The projects represented an investment worth $4 billion by NS customers, which are expected to generate more than 50,000 carloads of new rail traffic annually, according to an NS press release."We were pleased to see a steady stream of manufacturing projects and a markedly stronger portfolio overall near the end of the year, and that is an encouraging indicator for activity in the coming year," said Jason Reiner, assistant vice president industrial development. "Sixteen manufacturing-related projects contributed nearly $2 billion in new investment by customers and 3,000 new jobs during 2016."NS works with state and local economic development authorities on projects involving site location and development of infrastructure to connect customers to its rail system. The railroad also provides free and confidential facility location services, including industrial park planning, site layout, track design, and supply chain analysis, NS officials said.During the past 10 years, the company's industrial development department has assisted in the location and expansion of 945 facilities representing an investment of more than $60 billion. Norfolk Southern Corp. reported fourth-quarter 2016 net income rose 15 percent to $416 million, or $1.42 diluted earnings share, from $361 million, or $1.20 diluted earnings per share, in the same period a year ago.

Railway operating revenue during the quarter declined 1 percent to $2.5 billion compared with Q4 2015, reflecting lower merchandise and coal traffic, as well as reduced fuel surcharges.
