Bay Area Rapid Transit's (BART) board yesterday approved a $11.3 million contract to modernize  Powell Street Station in San Francisco and the construction of additional parking spaces at Antioch Station in Antioch, California.

Under the Powell Street Station contract, ProVen Management Inc. will reconfigure bathrooms, relocate ticket vending machines to the middle of the concourse, install LED lighting, install a glass fare barrier and relocate existing fare gates to improve passenger flow.

The U.S. Department of Labor HIRE Vets Medallion Program named Union Pacific Railroad a 2019 Gold Medallion recipient for its support of military veterans.

The department recognized the railroad’s operations management training program, employee benefits and the UP VETS employee resource group that connects service members to provide camaraderie and mentorship, UP officials said in a press release.

Texas Central yesterday announced an early contract involvement (ECI) agreement with Mass. Electric Construction Co. to define a future construction contract to build a high-speed train between Houston and Dallas.

The ECI will define the scope, execution plan, schedule and price for the future construction contract, which is expected to be signed later this year, Texas Central officials said in a press release.

Montana Rail Link (MRL) announced earlier this week that Derek Ollmann has been appointed president of the regional effective immediately.

A veteran of MRL's parent Washington Cos., Ollmann most recently served as president of Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY), which also is part of Washington Cos.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has appointed Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Leslie Richards as the authority's new general manager.

Richards will join SEPTA in January, following the retirement of GM Jeffrey Knueppel, SEPTA officials said in a press release.

Trinity Metro earlier this week expanded its ZIPZONE first- and last-mile solution for TEXRail commuter-rail riders at Mercantile Center Station in Fort Worth, Texas.

ZIPZONE allows riders to book a shared vehicle on-demand through a mobile application while at the station or a bus stop within the service area. Riders can then monitor their route and check their estimated time of arrival.

Sound Transit last week announced it will create a new naming system for its Link light-rail service.

The new naming convention stems from rider objections to the agency using the phrase “red line” to broadly represent the light-rail service. 

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) earlier this week completed a $1.2 million lighting upgrade at Jamaica Station in Queens, New York. 

The project involved installation of 1,700 LED lights to replace inefficient metal halide and fluorescent fixtures.

Kansas City Southern's 19th annual Holiday Express will distribute $170,450 to The Salvation Army at stops along the route to provide clothing and other necessities to children in need, the Class I announced yesterday.

The train will stop in 20 communities in five states on 25 dates, starting Nov. 27 and ending Dec. 22, KCS officials said in a press release.

U.S. freight railroads logged another traffic plunge in the week ending Nov. 16, with volumes down 8.4 percent to 501,249 carloads and intermodal units compared with the same week last year, according to Association of American Railroads' (AAR) data.

Total U.S. carloads fell 8.9 percent to 239,647 units during the week, while intermodal volume declined 7.9 percent to 261,602 containers and trailers.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday selected Mario Peloquin to serve as chief operating officer of the New York agency.

Peloquin has more than 30 years of expertise in the transportation and rail industry.

In its first public statement since more than 3,000 of its train conductors and rail-yard workers went on strike earlier this week, CN today advocated for voluntary binding arbitration to help settle the collective bargaining impasse between the Class I and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC-CTY).

In a statement posted on the company's website, CN President and Chief Executive Officer JJ Ruest said the company has offered to present its arguments to a neutral arbitrator to end the contract dispute, and hopes the TCRC-CTY will do the same.

Canadian Pacific has entered into an agreement to acquire Central Maine & Quebec Railway (CMQ) from Fortress Transportation and Infrastructure Investors LLC (FTAI), the companies announced yesterday.

CMQ owns 481 miles of rail lines primarily in Quebec and Maine. The acquisition will provide CP customers with seamless access to ports in Searsport, Maine, and to Saint John, New Brunswick, via Eastern Maine Railway Company (EMRY) and New Brunswick Southern Railway (NBSR), thereby preserving and enhancing competition, CP officials said in a press release.

Kansas City Southern has completed global deployment and roll-out of the CloudMoyo Operational Testing System (OTS) across all of its rail subsidiaries' locations in Mexico and the United States. The OTS combines the Microsoft Azure Cloud platform and advanced analytics to create configurable master test plans designed to confirm safe operating practices and compliance with Federal Railroad Administration regulations and Mexico law and regulations. The platform indicates potential opportunities for safety improvement, and also aids in effective plan development, CloudMoyo officials said in a press release.

Canadian Pacific (CP) will deploy the BlackBerry Radar asset monitoring solution across 2,000 domestic intermodal chassis at its Vaughan Intermodal Terminal in the Toronto area, Blackberry Ltd. announced. BlackBerry Radar provides near real-time information and analytics on location, motion, mileage, utilization and dwell and turn times of chassis, containers, trailers, rail cars and equipment. Collected data is transmitted and stored on a cloud platform. The information provided is designed to help CP improve asset utilization, reduce costs and improve service performance for customers, BlackBerry officials said in a press release.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is soliciting public comment on a draft of its four-year Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) through Dec. 17.

The draft 2020-2023 program features more than 1,200 multimodal transportation improvement projects using $3.4 billion in federal funds.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) will no longer accept fare tokens across its rail and bus systems as of Nov. 30. 

Over the last year and a half, the agency has been preparing for the elimination of tokens on its system in favor of its reloadable TAP fare cards. In May 2018, all token purchases ended and were phased out at third-party vendors, LA Metro officials said in a press release.
