Broward County's board of commissioners in Florida has approved a $31.4 million contract to purchase five streetcars from Siemens Industry Inc.

The units will be used on a planned  2.8-mile mile system in Fort Lauderdale, the Sun Sentinel reported Sept. 16. The board authorized purchasing five Siemens S70 vehicles for the Wave Streetcar, which is slated to open in early 2021. Construction on the $195 million project is expected to start in 2018.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) on Sept. 26 will issue $574 million worth of bonds, most of which have been deemed "sustainable," the agency announced yesterday.

Proceeds from sustainability bonds are used exclusively on projects that have environmental or social benefits.

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) has submitted to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) a "recovery plan" for its proposed 20-mile passenger-rail system, Pacific Business News reported yesterday.

The plan includes an updated financial plan for the project, which faces a $3 billion funding shortfall, according to the newspaper. The FTA previously asked HART to create a plan outlining how it will cover that shortfall.

The new Ray-Mont Logistics transload facility in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, welcomed its first unit train carrying agricultural products on CN's rail line, the Class I announced yesterday.

The new facility is located on Ridley Island, next to the recently expanded Port of Prince Rupert Fairview Container Terminal and connected to CN's network.

Union Pacific Railroad is consolidating six major business units and four subsidiaries as part of a restructuring of its marketing and sales organization to address "evolving customer needs," the Class I announced late last week.

The business units are being consolidated into four: agricultural products, energy, industrial and premium.

The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) yesterday presented the 19th annual Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence to BNSF Railway Co. and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) for a five-year passenger-rail improvement project.

Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway has begun a fleet-wide installation of Railhead Corp.'s Locomotive Digital Video Recorder (LDVR) HD system. The installations include forward- and inward-facing cameras, which are aimed at improving the quality of accident investigations and provide training tools to improve operator safety and compliance, Railhead officials said in a press release. The combination of LDVR, cameras and management software are expected to help Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway reduce maintenance and operating costs, improve efficiency and mitigate risk.

Avtec Inc. and Alcon Engenharia de Sistemas have been selected to provide a comprehensive dispatching solution for PAULISTA Metropolitan Trains Co.'s Line 13 commuter-rail route in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Avtec's solution will consist of seven Scout™ Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) consoles integrated with radio infrastructure. The technology is aimed at providing dispatchers with a reliable communications system to ensure safety, track control and operational efficiency, Avtec officials said in a press release. Slated to begin operations in 2018, the 7.6-mile Line 13 will connect downtown Sao Paulo to the Guarulhos International Airport.

TransLink over the weekend continued making upgrades at the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain Station in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The agency ran trains on a single track around the work area to make way for construction crews. TransLink will single-track trains again on Sept. 30.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) later this week will close its Warm Springs/South Fremont Station to prepare for the opening of the Silicon Valley extension.

In cooperation with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, BART will install new software at the station and test it. BART also will run test trains on the track, which is why the agency will close the station for a short time.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) last week honored the late Scott Carey of BatesCarey LLP with the 2017 David W. Fries Award for exemplary risk management practices in the railroad industry.

Carey died Aug. 14. The award was presented to his wife, Patricia, and oldest daughter, Ashley, at the Railroad Insurance Management Association's (RIMA) annual meeting held recently in Washington, D.C., AAR officials said in a press release.

MTA Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) $5.6 billion transformation initiative is now underway, railroad officials announced last week.

The initiative calls for 100 capital projects, including the addition of a third track along a 9.8-mile stretch of the Main Line between Floral Park and Hicksville, New York.

Funding for the Gateway Tunnel project was included in a $1.2 trillion spending bill that the U.S. House of Representatives passed last week.

The bill includes more than $900 million for the Gateway project in the transportation appropriations of H.R. 3354, said U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) in a press release.

The League of Railway Industry Women (LRIW) today announced Transportation Technology Center Inc. (TTCI) President Lisa Stabler has been named winner of the 2017 Outstanding Woman of the Year Award.

Stabler received the award at the general session of the Railway Interchange conference now underway in Indianapolis.

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) late last week opened its renovated 53rd Street R Line subway station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The station now features enhanced LED lighting, Wi-Fi connectivity, new digital displays, USB ports and countdown clocks to give real-time arrival information. Other upgrades include wayfinding floor tiles for the visually impaired, new handrails, stair treads, wall tiles and granite flooring.

Metra yesterday unveiled a new locomotive wrap to commemorate 40 years of continuous passenger service with its F40PH locomotives.

The Chicago Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) began taking delivery of its first set of F40PH locomotives in 1977. The agency started off with 28 of those units and eventually grew the fleet to 118. EMD developed the model and produced more than 500 of the units for the North American market.

The South Carolina Ports Authority yesterday welcomed to Charleston Harbor the CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt, the biggest ship to transit the Panama Canal and call on U.S. East Coast ports.

The 1,200-foot CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt — which has a capacity of 14,400 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) — arrived on the heels of the first construction contract for the Charleston Harbor deepening project being awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, port officials said in a press release.

Amtrak yesterday launched a new marketing campaign that takes aim at inconveniences travelers may face when journeying by car or plane.

Dubbed "Break the Travel Quo," the campaign features ads that highlight some of the "realities of air and car travel that have become par for the course," Amtrak officials said in a press release.

Michael Ward, who retired earlier this year as chairman and chief executive officer of CSX Corp., has been appointed to coal supplier Contura Energy Inc.'s board.

Ward spent 40 years at CSX and its predecessor company, Chessie System Inc. Most recently, he was the Class I's chairman and CEO from 2003 until his retirement. He was succeeded as CEO by E. Hunter Harrison.

The Port of Los Angeles registered a record-breaking August for container volume, marking the port's second-best month in its 110-year history, port officials announced Wednesday.

Container volume climbed 6.1 percent to 847,857 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August compared with the same month a year ago. The port’s busiest-ever month was November 2016, when it registered 877,564 TEUs.
