CSX reports lower Q1 earnings, withdraws 2020 outlook

CSX Corp. yesterday announced first-quarter 2020 net earnings fell 8 percent to $770 million, or $1 per share, compared to $834 million, or $1.02 per share, in the same quarter last year. The Class I withdrew its outlook for the year because of ongoing economic uncertainty over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Operating revenue fell 5 percent to $2.86 billion during the quarter, as growth in merchandise revenue was more than offset by declines in coal and other revenue. Expenses dropped 7 percent year over year to $1.68 billion, driven by efficiency gains, CSX officials said in a press release.

UP posts 'strong' Q1, expects Q2 volumes to fall 25 percent

Union Pacific Railroad today posted first-quarter net income of $1.5 billion, or $2.15 per diluted share, compared to $1.4 billion, or $1.93 per diluted share, a year ago. 

Operating revenue during the quarter declined 3 percent to $5.2 billion compared with the same quarter last year. Business volumes as measured by total revenue carloads fell 7 percent during the period versus a year ago, UP officials said in a press release.

STM, union agree to extend cleaning duties to administrative staff

Societe de transport de Montreal (STM) and the SCFP 2850 labor union yesterday reached an agreement to assign backup cleaning duties to administrative, technical and professional personnel to help step up cleaning practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Under the agreement, SCFP 2850 employees can be assigned, as needed, to clean high-touch areas on trains and at stations.

New Jersey Transit on April 25 will resume Hudson-Bergen light-rail service at MLK Drive and Garfield Avenue stations following completion of utility work by the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA).

The West Side Avenue Branch stations have been closed since June 1, 2019, as JCMUA worked to replace sewer pipes that run directly under the light-rail tracks.

The North Carolina State Ports Authority is equipped to handle more refrigerated containers, now that a new refrigerated container yard has opened at the Port of Wilmington, port officials announced last week.

The $14 million construction project increased the port's on-terminal refrigerated container (reefer) plugs from 235 to 775. Also added was a new reefer service area, as well as 27 reefer racks to support the stacking of refrigerated containers.

BTS: Transborder freight moved by rail rose in February

Transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation between the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 1.9 percent to a value of $95.9 billion worth of goods in February compared with February 2019 levels, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) announced yesterday.Rail, the second-most used mode, moved $14.4 billion worth of freight during February, a 10.3 percent increase compared with the same period a year ago. Year over year, freight moved by rail between the United States and Canada rose 2.9 percent to $7.3 billion worth of goods; and freight moved by rail between the United States and Mexico rose 19.3 percent to $7 billion worth of goods.The U.S.-Mexico rail increase was driven by a 29.6 percent rise in imports of vehicles other than railway, according to a BTS press release. Non-railway vehicles are 76.9 percent of imports by rail from Mexico.Freight moved by rail in February represented 15 percent of all transborder freight during moved during the month.The three busiest rail border ports and value of goods moved in February were in Laredo, Texas, $3.7 billion; Detroit, $2.3 billion; and Eagle Pass, Texas, $1.8 billion.The top three rail commodities and their value were: motor vehicles and parts, $7.4 billion; mineral fuels, $1.2 billion; and computers and parts, $700 million.Transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation in February dropped 1.2 percent from January, which is a smaller decline than the 1.5 percent decline during the same period a year earlier.

The Los Angeles–San Diego–San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) passenger-rail corridor agency yesterday was awarded a $38.7 million state grant to improve Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner service in Southern California. The agency oversees the Pacific Surfliner service. 

The funding is part of the California State Transportation Agency’s 2020 Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP), which will provide $500 million to projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving rail and transit services in the state.

Report: UP to cut executive salaries, require nonunion workers to take unpaid leave

Union Pacific Corp.'s senior executives will take a 25 percent salary cut and nonunion workers will be required to take unpaid leave, as the Class I responds to a drop in volume due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dow Jones Newswires reported according to Morningstar.com.The executive salary reductions will apply from May through August. Nonunion workers will be required to take one week of unpaid leave each month during the same period. About 85 percent of UP's 37,000 workforce are represented by unions.UP logged a 24 percent drop in carloads and intermodal containers shipped last week versus a year ago.UP reports first-quarter 2020 results on Thursday.

Freight-rail traffic trend reflects uncertain times

U.S. freight-rail traffic fell 23.3 percent to 403,283 carloads and intermodal units during the week ending April 18 compared with traffic during the same week last year, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

U.S. railroads posted 189,598 carloads, a 27.5 percent decline, and 213,685 intermodal containers and trailers, a 19.1 percent drop.

CP posts record Q1 revenue, updates 2020 outlook

Canadian Pacific yesterday reported record first-quarter revenue and a record-low operating ratio (OR), but updated its 2020 outlook to reflect the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

CP's first-quarter 2020 revenue climbed 16 percent to CA$2.04 billion from CA$1.77 billion during the same period a year ago. The diluted earnings per share (EPS) fell 4 percent to $2.98 from $3.09; the adjusted EPS rose 58 percent to $4.42 from $2.79 percent.

Gerald Reynolds has been named chief counsel for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the agency announced yesterday.

As the principal legal adviser to FRA Administrator Ronald Batory, Reynolds is responsible for overseeing all FRA legal matters. This includes providing counsel on freight and passenger-rail issues, including those related to safety and financial assistance programs. He also manages the FRA's legal department, which consists of 50 attorneys and staff.

TransLink lays off workers, reduces service to cut costs

TransLink yesterday announced it will lay off 1,492 employees, further reduce SkyTrain service and cut senior executive and board pay by 10 percent to save money, as ridership and revenue continue to fall during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

With ridership down 83 percent, TransLink is losing $75 million a month, which is an unsustainable rate of financial loss, TransLink officials said in a press release.

NTSB: Amtrak modified safety rules after fatal backhoe accident

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) yesterday announced three more of its top safety recommendations have been implemented, including one related to a fatal rail accident that occurred in Pennsylvania in April 2016.

After an Amtrak train struck a backhoe, killing two workers in April 2016 near Chester, Pennsylvania, the NTSB recommended that train dispatchers not be allowed to participate in potentially distracting activities, including making phone calls, while responsible for safe train operations.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday announced that 5,033 employees systemwide have returned to work following mandatory quarantines, and 4,112 employees remain in quarantine. 

Those who returned to work include 3,306 employees at MTA New York City Transit, 691 at MTA Long Island Rail Road and 522 at MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA officials said in press release.

CP posts record grain haul in Q1

Canadian Pacific logged its best first-quarter record for hauling Canadian grain and grain products during first-quarter 2020, during which the Class I hauled more than 6.35 million metric tons (MMT).

The 2020 results broke the company's previous Q1 record, set in 2016, by 300,000 metric tons, CP officials announced yesterday in a press release.

Bombardier Transportation signed a 10-year, $113 million contract with Fraport AG to continue operating and maintaining the Bombardier Innovia automated people mover system at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany. The contract also calls for Bombardier to install its CITYFLO 650 communication-based train control signaling technology on the system.

The Skanska, Costain and STRABAG joint venture signed a contract with HS2 Ltd. to design and construct tunnels in the approach to Euston Station in London by 2026. The project is part of Phase 1 of the United Kingdom’s high-speed railway.
